Janis Baron, Founder and Board President, Prior to founding Sunday Friends in 1997, worked for 15 years at Apple, Intel and other companies, including start-ups, in a variety of roles, including engineer, project leader and manager. 46 years of volunteer work, including tutoring, suicide prevention, inner-city community projects, work with developmentally disabled and mentally ill populations and creation of after-school curricula and community service clubs and events. She holds an M.S. in Computer Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Roselyn A. Hernandez, Vice President, Product Operations Commodity Manager, Product Operations at Cisco Systems, Inc. 28+ years of diverse experience in commodity and project management at Sun Microsystems and Cisco. 9 years experience as Board Member and Chair of the Marketing Committee at Immaculate Conception Academy, San Francisco. She holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies, San Jose State University.

 

Lily Gutierrez Marinsik, Treasurer, Senior Accountant with Brewer & Hulme, CPA's for 24 years. Business Consultant for the Law Offices of Fernando Chavez. 10 years of volunteer work with the National Charity League, schools and girl scouts. Treasurer for Leland High School, Graystone Elementary School and Almaden Cabana Club. She holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Lima.

 

Kunal Sampat, Secretary, Manager, Clinical Program Management at Abbott Vascular. Responsible for project management, budget, timeline and resource management. In 2008, his work led to FDA approval of the XIENCE V™ stent. Prior to joining Abbott Vascular, worked as an Imaging Research Associate at PAREXEL. Founder of Education Under A Tree, a nonprofit whose mission is educate unprivileged children in rural India. Kunal holds a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and a Master's in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco.

Margaret Akdeniz, Founder and Attorney at Akdeniz Law Group, specializing in labor and employment law for individuals and small businesses. Presiding Officer and Commissioner of the Civil Service Commission of the City of San Jose. Member of the American Constitution Society, the Equal Justice Society, the United States Navy Reserve Ret., the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Rose Garden Neighborhood Association, the Trans Access Business Advisory Board. Ambassador of the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Board Member of the College of Adaptive Arts. She holds a J.D. in Law from Santa Clara University School of Law.

Felice Lopiccolo, Partner/Co-founder of Community Collaborative Program (CCP) at Washington Elementary School, which mentors at-risk students by collaborating with families to address their community needs. National Charity League former Board Member (2005-2011) and current Sustainer with focus on philanthropy and mentoring. Committee chair for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Willow Glen. Fourteen years of program management experience. Former VP for ComGlobal Systems, San Jose division. Experience with software systems engineering, staff development, contract negotiations, and business development. She holds a BA/MA in Psychology/Biology, San Jose State University.

Jill McClure, Senior Human Resources Consultant at Scribd and other companies. 15 + years experience in human resources management, organizational development, recruitment, behavior management and customer service. She also spent 6 years as Residential Services Supervisor & Counselor managing a 6 bed facility for severely emotionally disturbed (SED) children in a clinical behavioral setting at Victor Treatment Centers. Board Member - Executive Committee - Vice President of Operations at GeoKids, a non-profit located at the US Geological Campus, Menlo Park, CA. She holds HRCI certifications for Global (GPHR) & Senior (SPHR) Human Resources Professional designations.

Rukmani Sahay, Associate Consultant at Campbell Alliance, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology consulting firm. 13+ years of diverse volunteer, leadership, evaluation and fundraising experiences at Sunday Friends. Has held clinical research and strategic roles in the healthcare field through Stanford University School of Medicine and Carnegie Mellon. Holds a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in International Relations and Politics, Carnegie Mellon University.

Vijay Talati, Vice President of Engineering at Juniper Networks with over 20 years of experience in the field. Manages a globally distributed team. Has volunteered with various local and international nonprofits, including Vibha and Sunday Friends. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology.

 

Rodrigo Canido, Managing Attorney at LORIC Immigration Solutions; Immigration lawyer focusing on a wide range of permanent and temporary immigration, deportation, deferred action, asylum and other issues. Past leadership experience includes: Student Body Chair, Referendum Committee Chair and Finance Chair for San Francisco State University Student Government; Founder, President, Treasurer and Secretary of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc.; 13 years of community service involvement. MBA in Business and JD in Immigration Law from American University in Washington; BA in Political Science from San Francisco State University.

Carlos Torres, Health Education Specialist at Santa Clara County Public Health Dept. 14 years of experience with community outreach services, including health and nutrition education, violence prevention services, graffiti/litter removal organizing, after school programs and case management for homeless and low-income in nutrition, mental health and substance abuse. Has worked for CARE, City of San Jose, City of Gilroy, Catholic Charities, YMCA. He holds a B.A. in Sociology with a Minor in Spanish from San Jose State University.

Jen Stirling, Associate Director of Development at Santa Clara University, serving as a Major Gift Officer for individuals and families and liaison for the College of Arts and Sciences and de Saisset Museum. Formerly worked for the Office of Development at Stanford University and as a 4th grade teacher in East Side San Jose. 8 years of volunteer work as a Child Advocate for a foster child. Active member of the Junior League of San Jose. She holds an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Education with an emphasis in Alternative Education and Correctional Psychology from Santa Clara University.

Board of Advisors

Mike Fox, Jr., CEO of Goodwill Industries Silicon Valley.  Over 25 years of experience in redefining business processes and penetrating new markets for companies in the wholesale and B2B service sectors.  Led a team that grew Goodwill SV from a combined loss of 3.5 million dollars in 2007/2008 to a profit of $2.5 million in 2009/ 2010.  In 2012, Goodwill achieved an operating profit of over $3.5 million and invested an additional 1.3 million into Mission Services.  Extensive experience with Board membership and chair positions – e.g., San Jose Chamber of Commerce, Team San Jose, San Jose Downtown Rotary, Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Foundation Board  and many more.  Also, has played key roles in multiple political campaigns.  He holds a Trans Global MBA from St. Mary's College.

Katie Middlebrook, District English Learner Instructional Coach, San Jose Unified School District.  Over 20 years of experience in elementary education in Santa Clara County.  Collaborative educational administrator offering 12 years of transformational leadership with proven results in a range of school settings. She seeks to create positive learning environments for school communities where trust and productive relationships between students, parents, teachers and administration yield exemplary results, both academically and socially. Honored as the principal of a California Distinguished School,  Katie holds her BS/MA in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University.

Michael Fallon, Adjunct Faculty, San Jose State University, Sociology; and Co-Director, Center for Community Learning & Leadership. Responsible for Service-Learning & Community Engagement programs, including community partnerships. Member of SJSU's Sustainability Board, and Faculty Fellow of the Global Seminar Program. Long-term affiliate of Sunday Friends, Catholic Charities STEP-UP Campaign to Cut Poverty, Neighborhood Housing Services Silicon Valley, United Way Bank on San Jose, among others.

Lynne H. Brown, Ph.D., non-profit consultant with fundraising and resource acquisition expertise.  25 years of experience in software and semi-conductor companies.  Extensive community involvement including active committee roles in Step-up Silicon Valley, The Franklin McKinley Children's Initiative and the Charity Council of The Silicon Valley Capital Club. Plays a key role in the ongoing revitalization of the Santee Community. She holds a BS and MS in Experimental Psychology and a PhD in Applied Statistics from Purdue University.

Ann Danner, Consultant to Nonprofits, specializing in strategic planning, board development and fundraising planning. Currently serves on two boards: Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) and Housing for Independent People (HIP). Until recently, served on the Board of The Health Trust. Former Executive Director of the Nonprofit Development Center (now CompassPoint), 1993-1997. Former Executive Director of the Foundation for HOPE (8 years). Served on the Foothill DeAnza Foundation, honored by the National Society of Fundraising Executives, Silicon Valley Chapter, as Professional Fund Raiser of the Year.

Seth M. Schalet, Principal, Operational IMPACT Partners LLC., providing operations management services to 501 (c)(3) nonprofits, foundations and endowments. Previously, the Chief Operating Officer of the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto, CA, responsible for a $15M operating budget and leading programs, IT, finance, facilities and work with Board and volunteers. 25 years in global operations, sales, marketing and business unit leadership with public, private and nonprofit entities. Fortune 2000, start-up, VC and private equity backed portfolios.

Archana Sathaye Ph.D., fundraiser for nonprofits, technology consultant in Data Analysis and Mathematical Modeling. Board member of Air Systems Foundation Scholarship Board, Advisory Board of The Harker School . Past positions include Santa Clara University Business School Adjunct faculty, San Jose State University Computer Science faculty, Principal Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation. Harker School Fashion Show 2007 Event Chair, 2003-2007 Sponsorship Chair and Executive Committee Member of Harker School Capital Campaign.

Mark Rakic, Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources, Coherent, Inc. Over 20 years experience in human resource leadership roles within software, hardware and biotech industries. Specializes in mergers and acquisitions, staffing, organizational development, professional development and employee relations.

Ron Victor, President and co-founder of Vibha Inc., founded in 1991. Has over 20 years of expertise and experience in social change causes. Is a technology entrepreneur based in Silicon Valley, California, working on next generation wireless technologies. Has also played an active role at other non-profits including Habitat for Humanity, The American Red Cross and Missionaries of Charity.
