Developmental assets are the positive relationships, opportunities, values and skills that young people need to grow up
to be caring and responsible.
BACKGROUND:
Since 1989,
Search Institute
of Minneapolis has measured Developmental Assets in more than two million youths in communities across the United States.
Based on the Developmental Assets framework that synthesized relevant research literature, Search Institute identified 40
developmental nutrients all youth need. These are concerte, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to
raising successful young people.
The Santa Clara County-based collaborative
Project Cornerstone
has been promoting Search Institute's Developmental Assets approach since 1998. Project Cornerstone added the 41st asset,
"positive cultural identity", to the existing framework for internal assets. This new asset celebrates and deepens one's
cultural identity, inclusive of ethnicity, race, gender or sexual orientation.
Search Institute's research shows that youth need 31 or more of the 41 assets to thrive. Sunday Friends focuses on imparting
35 of the 41 developmental assets.
The 35 assets that we directly address in Sunday Friends are:
