For over two years, Sunday Friends has been offering English-as-a-Second-Language instruction during our programs.
Dozens of participants, primarily parents, are engaged in practical English education through conversation, writting and reading. The learning is supported in all other aspects of our program, including letter writing to donors, educational games and so much more.
Cathy Bullock and Marty Burns, our volunteer instructors, bring over 22 years of teaching experience to their classrooms. They use a carefully chosen text book, (Inglais para Latinos), lead discussion groups and even assign homework. English-as-a-Second-Language has become so popular that we expanded to two classes per program in 2007. The San Jose Unified School District has provided a separate classroom on our campus at Lowell School to help maintain an academic environment to enhance learning.
The results have been fantastic. More of our participating families are writing thank you letters to the community in English than ever before. More and more, families are chosing to converse in English, too. As they practice, their confidence grows.
English proficiency is a vital tool in breaking the cycle of poverty. We are proud of the efforts our families are making to learn this critical skill. |
