There are no free handouts at Sunday Friends;
families earn the basic necessities they receive. This approach of earning, instead of traditional charity, builds self-confidence in families and brings out the best in each person. Sunday Friends provides a structured, opportunity-rich environment for very low-income families to give back to their community while they meet their basic needs and develop self-sufficiency for the long-term.
Every Sunday Friends program includes over 300 people: children, their parents and community volunteers.
The programs are designed to foster the growth of developmental assets in children. Parent
involvement ensures that the practice of positive life skills will continue throughout the week.
•
Every aspect of the Sunday Friends program empowers
families to develop self-reliance by earning
the items that they want and need.
•
Sunday Friends provides a nurturing environment for
practicing work ethics, manners, English language, money
management and healthy living in a
community setting.
•
Sunday Friends brings diverse communities together
in a circle of giving and receiving. Donors receive
personal thank you letters from children and parents. Volunteers and
families work side by side together as equals, sharing food,
productivity and fun.
•
As we teach new skills to children, we consciously include their parents
in all parts of the program so the new attitudes and work styles can be carried on within the home.
•
Sunday Friends has created a financially responsible model
of how the more privileged members of our society can come together
with the less privileged in ways that uplift us all.
