"In other places, we aren't able to see the effects of what our volunteering does.
Also, Sunday Friends doesn't just hand each family the donations so it doesn't feel like a charity.
It seems more like everyone working together and helping each other." — College Student Volunteer

Group Opportunities

Sunday Friends offers many creative and satisfying volunteer opportunities for groups. Are you part of a corporate group, a school club, a scout troop, a singles group, a church or synagogue group, an extended family, or some other organization? If so, please consider the suggestions below. Or, print our Calendar of Opportunities for 2008 and share it with your colleagues or group members.

Create a Gift Drive
We always need groups to collect program supplies and store merchandise for us. We need school supplies, basic necessities (diapers, dish soap, laundry detergent and other consumables), toys, December holiday gifts, Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts, Halloween costumes, and much more. For more ideas, click on Donate Goods and Collect at Work or School. For extra fun, consider a competition, raffle or special reward.

Be a Guest Group on a Sunday
We invite two guest groups to help us plan, supply and lead two projects within each program. Most groups choose to create an art or food preparation project.  Please have your Group Leader read the new volunteer orientation and then contact Sunday Friends at (408) 793-0441. Leave a detailed message. We will get back to you within 24 hours (excluding Sundays).

Your Group Leader will work with us to identify a project that supports our programs' goals, to schedule a date and to determine how many volunteers are appropriate for the project. Together, we will refine the project and decide which specific supplies (cooking ingredients, craft materials, etc.) you will bring. Your Group Leader will be responsible to make sure that each member has read the new volunteer orientation and has completed the necessary paperwork. Individual members of the group need not call for the phone interview. Your Group Leader will communicate all plans with the group.

Groups also make great Shopping Guide teams. There is very little advanced preparation. You will all work together and each of you will spend one-on-one time with family members. Since the shopping is such an important part of the Sunday Friends experience, your contributions will be especially meaningful. Please ask us about the Shopping Guide Group opportunity when you call.

When your big day arrives, we'll welcome your group, help you set up and assist you in making your project a success. You will probably want to bring a camera to record the event.

Have a Party and Collect Toys or Materials
Another fun way to collect donations is to have a party and ask every guest to bring one or more toys for the kids (or something consistent with your chosen theme). After you collect items for Sunday Friends, you will receive handwritten thank you letters from the children and their parents which you can share with your guests or post in your work place or school.

Expand and Teach your Spanish Language Skills
Spanish clubs or Spanish-speaking groups can utilize (and enhance) their language skills. Help us communicate with Hispanic families. Help them write letters in English or translate their letters from Spanish to English. Create and lead Spanish-English teaching tools and games. Escort Spanish-speaking participants as they shop with the tickets they have earned.

Create a Craft Project in your own Home or Meeting Place
Consult with us first, then create a craft project for our program. Have your group pick a fun craft project and create some finished examples to show us. Your group will then make "kits" for the kids (maybe in individual bags) by assembling and preparing the pieces. Deliver the project so we can implement it within the program. You may even want to send one or two people from your group to join us on the implementation day. We will send you photos of children immersed in your project.

Raise Money
In addition to the many items we seek in donations, we also need money to pay for such essentials as fresh food, diapers, school supplies, batteries, equipment, etc. If you choose to raise and donate money, we will be happy to support your efforts in any way we can. For instance, we can provide speakers, brochures, posters, photos and donation envelopes. We will also provide an accounting of how your funds were used.
