"The program acts as a reminder to my kids of their good fortune and for all of us to see how we can have fun, meet new friends, and learn about our neighbors and ourselves while we help others to help themselves." — Adult Volunteer

Dear Parents

If your teen is interested in volunteering with Sunday Friends, this page is for you. Please read the following information, then fully fill out and submit the Parent Permission Form.

What does Sunday Friends offer your Teen?

Sunday Friends was initially designed to offer a personal and meaningful, yet safe and wholesome volunteering opportunity for teens, adults and families in our community. It is important to us that all volunteers have a positive experience that allows them to expand their pictures of themselves, of people with different life circumstances and of their potential roles in the world.

What is Sunday Friends?

Since 1997, Sunday Friends has provided a safe place where homeless and very-low-income families come together with volunteers in a community setting. We meet from 11 am to 7 pm at Lowell Elementary School in downtown San Jose. Your teen will be assisting children and/or the program with constructive projects, including cooking, juicing, art, writing, reading and educational games. Your teen may also help program participants earn tickets, which they will later spend within our on-site "store". Your teen will have the opportunity to serve as a positive role model for young children while helping them to practice work ethics, manners and academics. The setting is healthy, warm and supportive.

How can You Help Sunday Friends?

Sunday Friends was started primarily as a means to provide volunteer opportunities to teens. Each year, over 2,000 volunteers enjoy a fulfilling experience with us. Coordinating and scheduling volunteers, creating innovative programs and communicating the values we impart has associated costs. We urge you to contribute so we can continue to run our programs and sustain these opportunities for your teens. We would be grateful if you would send a check to the program with your teen to help defray our costs. Or you can donate online now.

Who can Volunteer?

• Children under age 14 are welcome to join us with parents.

• Anyone 14 and older is welcome to join us after completing the Volunteer Orientation. All prospective volunteers must click on New Volunteer Orientation, read it thoroughly and complete all instructions, including a five-minute phone interview, before attending their first program.

• The primary qualification for being a volunteer is: If you love children, if you're willing and able to be a good role model, we need you.

Thank you for supporting your teen's growth through meaningful community service.
