"It is an honor to you, to your community partners, to your University, and to your professor, that your outstanding efforts (were) recognized by this distinguished body."
— Michael Fallon, Community Partnerships and Program Coordinator, San Jose State University
We are proud to announce that Thuy Le and Carlos Torres (pictured above), along with their classmates, Rosa Pereida and Hector Sandoval, were selected to present their paper at the national Continuums of Service Conference here in San Jose this April. Their presentation was a reflection of the scholarship and enthusiasm they have shown in their service-learning.
Carlos and Thuy have been outstanding volunteers for Sunday Friends since they joined us
through their Sociology 57 class at San Jose State University. We congratulate them on this honor.
A quote from their paper, "Community Involvement and Personal Growth:
A Holistic Approach to Service-Learning":
"Personal experiences and realizations are what service really is,
and are critical to what role we play in society.
We have the means to change populations for the better through sacrifice and endeavor.
When we realize that community is built on the holistic needs of every person,
and individuals change their outlook, our personal outlook on what we offer others – changes."
