"Sunday Friends is the greatest place to do community service.
The children become your friends and
you end up not wanting to leave but to stay with them." — Teen Volunteer

What is a Day like for Volunteers at Sunday Friends?

We're at Lowell Elementary School the second and fourth Sunday each month. When you arrive, you'll sign in, then see tables prepared and families already writing thank you letters to our donors. These families are beginning to earn the tickets that they will later spend within our on-site "store", the Treasure Chest. They are also waiting for you to set up and run additional projects that will provide them with more opportunities to contribute, to learn and to earn.

Who will you work with?

Our program is attended by families — children accompanied by parents or other responsible adults — who are very-low-income. You will assist children and, possibly, also parents as they participate in our activities, earn tickets and use those tickets to shop in the Treasure Chest.

What will you do?

When you arrive, you'll be greeted by a Program Leader who will hand you a printed description of the day's planned projects and let you know which of those activities are needing volunteers. You'll be offered opportunities to:

Facilitate specific art projects Run our Sunday Friends Bank
Help children prepare and serve healthy foods Oversee grounds cleanup or tending
Assist children in writing letters Serve as a Paymaster (the one who gives participants tickets for their contributions)
Use your Spanish language skills to translate written letters from Spanish to English Help our Store Managers set up the Treasure Chest in preparation for the shopping
Create educational materials Join the Green Team and assist with loading, unloading and cleaning
Lead a sewing or gardening or other special project Become an Orange Vest Shopping Guide (in the second half of the program) and escort children and their parents one-on-one as they shop within our Treasure Chest

When you are offered a choice of roles to play, please speak up and let us know which opportunity is the best match for you.
